Trip overview
The Jomsom Muktinath Pilgrimage tour is probably the single most popular tour in Nepal. The diverse landscapes and cultures to be found along the tour route give a marvelous insight into the way of life of rural Nepalese people. The route to Jomsom up the Kaligandaki River passes through a gap in the Himalayan barrier in the bottom of the deepest river canyon in the world. The valley of the Kaligandaki River that runs between Dhaulagiri and Annapurna Mountain is very beautiful. Therefore, it offers good views of the mountains with spectacular and varied scenery on the way. The abrupt variation in altitude found here is astonishing.
Normally the tour continues above Jomsom to Muktinath, the famous pilgrimage site for both Buddhists and Hindus. The people of this part of Nepal are a mixture of Gurung and Magar in the lower stretches of the Kali Gandaki, Thakali people around Jomsom and people with obvious Tibetan roots, the Loba around Muktinath. Their customs and dress are all quite distinct and this tour gives a chance to see those differences.
